Groleo

Groleo, a Pentoshi sea captain and admiral in Daenerys Targaryen's service, met his end as a hostage of the Yunkai'i, his severed head delivered to the Meereenese court as a brutal declaration that the fragile peace had collapsed.

Background and Service

Groleo was the master of the great cog Saduleon, which carried Daenerys Targaryen from Pentos to Qarth and then to Slaver's Bay. After the ship was broken up to build siege engines for the conquest of Meereen, Daenerys consoled him by naming him her lord admiral, though the honor was hollow; the Meereenese fleet had fled before her host, leaving him an admiral without ships. He was a grizzled, unhappy man, far from home and sick at heart, who longed to see his old wife again. He had been sent to bring Daenerys back to Pentos, but instead she brought him to Meereen and tore his ship to pieces.

Hostage and Execution

As part of the peace accords between Meereen and Yunkai, seven hostages were exchanged to guarantee the safety of the envoys. Groleo was one of those given to the Yunkai'i, along with Daario Naharis, Jhogo, Hero, and three of Hizdahr's kin. When the peace shattered after the chaos of Daznak's Pit, the Yunkish lords demanded blood for the death of their supreme commander, Yurkhaz zo Yunzak, who had perished in the dragon's attack. The Yunkai'i selected Groleo as the first hostage to be killed, sending his head to King Hizdahr's court. The head was presented by the sellsword captain Bloodbeard, who flung it at the feet of the seneschal Reznak mo Reznak. It had taken more than one blow to sever it from his body.

Consequences and Significance

The delivery of Groleo's head was a direct act of war that shattered the peace Hizdahr had brokered. It demonstrated that the Yunkai'i would not be satisfied with mere negotiation and that the hostages were not safe. The murder of Groleo, a man who had crossed half the world with Daenerys and served her loyally, hardened the resolve of her followers. Barristan Selmy, who had crossed the world with him, was deeply affected, and the event became a catalyst for the conspiracy to overthrow Hizdahr and resume the war. Groleo's death was a clear signal that the conflict was far from over and that the slavers would stop at nothing to destroy Daenerys's rule.
